The clue is in William's wife Elizabeth, namely who she 2 CONT was and more importantly who she was not. Clarence [Meacham] and 2 CONT everyone since has labelled her as Elizabeth Crutchfield, 2 CONT sometimes with but usually without the "?" and the speculative 2 CONT terms that Clarence used. He wrote: 1 NOTE 1 NOTE "It is quite possible that Elizabeth Meacham's maiden name was 2 CONT Crutchfield, since William Meacham's will is signed by Thomas 2 CONT Crutchfield and Anderson Crutchfield. Two professional 2 CONT genealogists have told me that a will or deed was almost always 2 CONT witnessed by a relative." 1 NOTE 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Other evidence is the fact that John Crutchfield sold William a 2 CONT tract of land in Chatham County, North Carolina in 1790. Now all 2 CONT of this certainly indicates a strong relationship between 2 CONT William Meacham and the Crutchfields. The problem lies in trying 2 CONT to identify his wife with any known Elizabeth Crutchfield. 2 CONT Clarence suggested the daughter of Henry Crutchfield, sister of 2 CONT Thomas and Anderson. It was found later that she married someone 2 CONT else and moved to Tennessee. Another suggestion was Elizabeth, 2 CONT daughter of James Crutchfield, but she was born entirely too 2 CONT late (1760s) to be William's wife. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE And then there is the curious fact of Joseph Meacham who married 2 CONT an Elizabeth Crutchfield, as recorded in the Christ Church 2 CONT register on Jan. 9, 1728. This fact bothered me, and apparently 2 CONT Clarence was not too comfortable with it either, as he raised 2 CONT questions about whether it was Cruthhfield rather than 2 CONT Crutchfield, and whether it was Ann instead of Elizabeth. There 2 CONT is however no doubt about what the register actually says. 2 CONT Multiple marriages between clans are common, but to find two 2 CONT Elizabeth Crutchfields both marrying Meachams is highly 2 CONT improbable. A lengthy correspondence with a Crutchfield 2 CONT researcher has convinced me of two things: the Crutchfield 2 CONT family trees are well documented, and there is no Elizabeth who 2 CONT fits the vital profile of William's wife: born between 1720-40, 2 CONT child bearing 1758-72, still alive in 1813, and of course not 2 CONT married to somebody else after 1758! 1 NOTE 1 NOTE A third element was necessary, before the conclusion fairly 2 CONT exploded into view. Joseph Meacham apparently moved to Caroline 2 CONT County in the 1730s. These are the facts I could find about him 2 CONT after his marriage to Elizabeth Crutchfield in 1728: 1 NOTE 1 NOTE * 1729 -- Mary daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth was born Nov. 2 CONT 11, 1729 in Middlesex Co. 1 NOTE * 1732 -- Joseph takes an orphan child by indenture from 2 CONT Petsworth parish in Gloucester Co. 1 NOTE * 1743 -- Joseph is appointed as constable in Caroline Co. 1 NOTE * 1745-57 -- Joseph is mentioned occasionally in court records 2 CONT of Caroline Co., frequently in association with Crutchfields 1 NOTE * 1765 -- Joseph's will is recorded in court, with Elizabeth as 2 CONT Executrix. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE So the "Crutchfield connection" was through the wife of Joseph 2 CONT -- first Eureka! Now if William Sr. d. 1808 really was the son 2 CONT of James and Mary born 1718 in Middlesex Co., he and Joseph were 2 CONT cousins. Perhaps this William, then in his teens, accompanied 2 CONT Joseph to Caroline Co. in the 1730s to seek his fortune, and 2 CONT became part of the Meacham-Crutchfield extended family there. 2 CONT But it is very odd as noted above that his name does not appear 2 CONT anywhere until he is 47. Joseph's brother James may have 2 CONT accompanied him as well. There is a James Meacham whose estate 2 CONT was appraised in Caroline Co. in 1759. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE The very close links that William had with the Crutchfields 2 CONT carried on into North Carolina, with the sale to him of 640 2 CONT acres of their land in Chatham County, and of course the 2 CONT witnessing of his will. The more I considered Clarence's 2 CONT statement -- "professional genealogists have told me that a will 2 CONT or deed was almost always witnessed by a relative" -- the more 2 CONT perplexed I was to explain the situation. Yes, the Crutchfields 2 CONT were his neighbors, but somehow this was not quite satisfactory 2 CONT as an explanation. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Then a big Eureka! William's first son was named Joseph 2 CONT ................. William's father was Joseph!!! This would 2 CONT explain the close bond to the Crutchfields: he WAS one, his 2 CONT mother being nee Elizabeth Crutchfield. He was probably born in 2 CONT the middle or late 1730s, just after the move to Caroline 2 CONT County. If this lineage is true, it could also explain the 2 CONT naming of William's first daughter Jane. William's paternal 2 CONT grandmother was Jane, although admittedly she died (1722) before 2 CONT he was born. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE This scenario is not of course proven, but it is supported by 2 CONT the available evidence, and it explains that evidence better 2 CONT than the notion that his wife "must have been" a Crutchfield. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Then came the monumental Eureka -- several sources give the date 2 CONT of Joseph's death as 1765. Clarence has this (p. 192), in his 2 CONT usual confusing style: 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Joseph Meacham b. 7 Oct 1705 resided Midd. Co. VA. Christ Ch 2 CONT Parish (perhaps he is Joseph B. of Carolina Co. VA.) m. 9 jan 2 CONT 1728 Midd. Co. VA.(Christ Ch.) to Elizabeth Crutchfield. He 2 CONT d.1765. Will 1765 Midd. Co. VA. Inf. VA. 2 CONT Source- "Colonial People" descendent 1765 Meacham Joseph Exor. 2 CONT Elizabeth Meacham (Carolina Co. VA.) 1 NOTE 1 NOTE I have been unable to find the reference "Colonial People." 2 CONT Next, I found the following data from T.E. Campbell's book 2 CONT Colonial Caroline - A History of Caroline County, Virginia: in 2 CONT 1765 Joseph Meacham is listed as deceased and the executors of 2 CONT his estate are Joseph and Elizabeth Meacham. I then attempted to 2 CONT locate the original source for this data. Assuming that it must 2 CONT have been the Caroline County court records, I tracked down 2 CONT someone who had access to the indexes prepared by John F. Dorman 2 CONT and published as Caroline County Virginia Court Order Books 2 CONT 1732-1788. The following references were located for 1765: 2 CONT Elizabeth Mitchum 8-9-1765 and 9-12-1765. Neither of these had 2 CONT any mention of Joseph. I then resolved, in order to find the 2 CONT reference to Joseph's will, to read all the original text of the 2 CONT court order books for 1765. This was a daunting task, for while 2 CONT the microfilm is generally as good a reproduction as can be 2 CONT expected, the pages are often faded, the script faint, and the 2 CONT handwriting often very difficult to decipher. After two hours of 2 CONT reading, I found it. The first sentence set my heart racing. 2 CONT There it was -- a break through the brick wall: "The last will 2 CONT and testatment of Joseph Meacham Deceased was brought into Court 2 CONT by Elizabeth Meacham Executrix and William Meacham Executor 2 CONT therein named..." 1 NOTE 1 NOTE The practice was, and often is still, that a man's widow and/or 2 CONT his eldest son would be named the executors of his estate. It 2 CONT was not an iron-clad rule, but it was certainly a general 2 CONT custom. This is what Joseph seems to have done. It is not proven 2 CONT beyond doubt that William was not his cousin, but combined with 2 CONT the other circumstances already discussed above, the evidence is 2 CONT fairly compelling that William was his son born after the family 2 CONT moved to Caroline County. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Finally, there is another curious fact which it is tempting to 2 CONT tie into the story. In 1732 Joseph Meacham was compensated 1200 2 CONT lbs. of tobacco for taking an orphan child on indenture from 2 CONT Petsworth Parish in Gloucester County. We do not know the age of 2 CONT the child, but we have her name -- Elizabeth Knoles. Is it 2 CONT possible that this adopted child/indentured servant to the 2 CONT household could later have become William's wife? This would 2 CONT have been an almost incestuous marriage, but legal (vide Woody 2 CONT and Soon-yi Allen). Or did Elizabeth Knoles take the family name 2 CONT Meacham, and is she the "Elizabeth Meacham" who is sued for debt 2 CONT in Caroline Co. in September,1765, the year Joseph died? It 2 CONT would seem unlikely that this is Elizabeth the widow of Joseph, 2 CONT since as a Crutchfield she apparently had many wealthy relatives 2 CONT to call upon. Furthermore, if the debt was one owed by her late 2 CONT husband, the defendant in the action would have been named as 2 CONT "Elizabeth Meacham Executor of the Estate of Joseph Meacham" or 2 CONT simply "The estate of Joseph Meacham." If it was against her 2 CONT personally, it would probably have named her "Elizabeth Meacham 2 CONT widow," especially as she was widowed only a few months 2 CONT previously. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE The reader will have no doubt noticed that there are altogether 2 CONT too many Elizabeths in this clan, for if William did not marry 2 CONT his adoptive sister, then he had a mother, sister, AND wife all 2 CONT named Elizabeth. And of course he named one of his daughters 2 CONT Elizabeth too.Ó 2 SOUR @S282@ 1 FAMC @F3707@ 1 FAMS @F14@ 0 @I28@ INDI 1 NAME Peter /BREWER/ 1 SEX M 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1782 2 PLAC Orange County, NC 2 NOTE Brewer Families of Colonial Virginia 1626-1776 by Broyhill. 2 SOUR @S280@ 1 FAMC @F146@ 1 FAMS @F15@ 0 @I29@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F14@ 0 @I30@ INDI 1 NAME Phoebe /McPHERSON/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1 JAN 1768 2 PLAC Chatham County, NC 1 FAMC @F3285@ 1 FAMS @F16@ 0 @I31@ INDI 1 NAME Aaron /LINDLEY/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 30 JAN 1768 1 DEAT 2 DATE 22 APR 1853 2 PLAC Morgan County, IN 1 FAMC @F17@ 1 FAMS @F16@ 0 @I32@ INDI 1 NAME Sarah /EVANS/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 15 JUN 1743 2 PLAC Chester County, PA 2 NOTE Actual Quaker birth date: 15 6M 1743 1 DEAT 2 DATE 25 OCT 1790 2 NOTE May have been 1796. 1 FAMC @F19@ 1 FAMS @F17@ 0 @I33@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas /LINDLEY/ Jr. 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 7 OCT 1740 2 PLAC London Grove, PA 2 NOTE 8th month according to Quaker dating system. 1 DEAT 2 DATE 28 FEB 1833 2 PLAC Orange County, NC 1 FAMC @F20@ 1 FAMS @F17@ 1 FAMS @F2836@ 0 @I34@ INDI 1 NAME Ruth /SHIRES/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1682-1696 2 PLAC Marsden, Lincolnshire, England 2 NOTE Some sources say Ruth Shires (or Shiers) was born in Inverness, 3 CONT Scotland (although there are no Shires in the early parish 3 CONT records of Inverness), or Chester, PA, or Òin EnglandÓ. The Cross Roads Presbyterian Church contains 2 CONT over 56 graves of the Murray family members and possibly more 2 CONT are unmarked. Our branch of this Murray family moved over to 2 CONT the southwestern part of Alamance County before 1823 near 2 CONT Stinking Quarter Creek. [From photocopied materials found in a 2 CONT book in the Alamance County Library] 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Regarding the Scots-Irish and immigration and settlement of the 2 CONT Scots-Irish to America [Historical Introduction by Edgar Murray] 1 NOTE 1 NOTE This is an attempt to list the family tree of Murray and related 2 CONT families, 1 NOTE the Scots-Irish, who settled during the 1700's in Orange, now 2 CONT Alamance county near the present Cross Roads Church. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE The name ÒScots-IrishÓ has a special meaning, In 1600 King James 2 CONT I of England, having conquered Ireland, set up the Ulster 2 CONT Plantations in Ireland. He offered 2000 acres to anyone who 2 CONT would get 20 families to go there and settle on each 2000-acre 2 CONT plot. He had hoped that it would attract the poor in English 2 CONT cities, but most of the people who went there were Scots. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE They considered themselves as still Scots, merely living in 2 CONT Ireland. They had very little to do with the Irish (Catholics) 2 CONT while retaining their own Presbyterian Churches. By early 1700 2 CONT they more or less outnumbered the Irish. Quit Rents became to 2 CONT much to pay, and laws were passed that excluded anyone from 2 CONT holding public office or serving in the military who was not a 2 CONT member of the Catholic Church. The Scots had to pay tithes to 2 CONT the Catholic Church. It was too much: In late 1600 they started 2 CONT coming to America in large numbers. The greatest numbers came 2 CONT in 1721 and 1739, settling in Pennsylvania, Delaware and 2 CONT Maryland. By 1740 no more land was available in Pennsylvania, 2 CONT so the Scots headed for the "back country" where land was cheap 2 CONT or could be acquired by just settling on the land. There were 2 CONT few if any Indians left, they having moved west and north. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE The first to arrive in North Carolina were those names are 2 CONT common in the area today - Murray -Tate - Anderson - White - 2 CONT Mebane, etc. The original settlers arrived in 1740-1755 and 2 CONT settled in-groups; near Cross Roads and old Hawfields, along the 2 CONT Eno River and at Hillsboro. There were no roads - just Indian 2 CONT and traders trails - and everything had to be brought by horses 2 CONT or on horse drawn sleds. The trails were slowly enlarged and by 2 CONT 1765 there were a few wagons. Hillsboro became a town in 1765 2 CONT and by 1775 Orange County became the most populous county in 2 CONT North Carolina. Orange County was reduced in size several 2 CONT times. Alamance was cut off in 1858. The earliest towns were 2 CONT at Fayetteville, Henderson, Danville, and South Boston, 2 CONT Virginia. And to supply needs, villages with their stores, 2 CONT shops, etc sprang up where roads crossed or services were 2 CONT needed. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE There were 5 special events that had considerable impact on the 2 CONT people in this area. First was the Revolution that divided the 2 CONT people and set up a new nation. Then the war of 1812 with 2 CONT England. The great depression of 1837 when many settlers in 2 CONT Orange moved west. Shortly after this Cotton Mills began to 2 CONT appear along the streams in the area and the farmers started 2 CONT moving into the mill areas for steady pay and less gambling on 2 CONT how crops would turn out and sell. Finally the Civil Was 2 CONT destroyed almost everything that had taken so long to build up. 2 CONT Whole families left the farms since the number of men killed 2 CONT during the war left almost no one to run the farms. This area 2 CONT had slaves, but they were limited in number since there were 2 CONT very few really large plantations that could economically use 2 CONT them before 1865. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE My work started out to trace my own family which came from the 2 CONT Cross Roads area. The more I learned in this effort the more it 2 CONT became apparent that all the information should be put into a 2 CONT form which could be preserved and as a help to others who might 2 CONT like to trace their families but did not have the time required 2 CONT to do so. From the original William Murray and James Murray, I 2 CONT have tried to bring their families (They were tied together by 2 CONT marriage in 1778) down to at least 1850-1900. At this point any 2 CONT mature person who knows who his grandparents were can add to the 2 CONT data I have assembled to complete his family tree, provided his 2 CONT family is listed here.
