Comments Notes for Mary (Spouse 1)
[From Les Lindley: Abstract 4-124 Orange County Court of August 26, 1782]
"Sackfield Brewer appointed guardian for Mary Brewer age 3 years march 1782 (Agrees with March 28, 1779 date in Meacham Bible), and Peter Brewer 1 year old July 1782."

[Orange County Court Records] 1785 May Court "Being suggested to court that Mary and Peter Brewer bound to Sackville Brewer at last court ...being injurious to said orphans. Ordered that Sackville Brewer deliver said orphans to James Lindsey and Delila his wife, they entering into bond to bring said orphans to next court at Hillsboro."15

It is unclear to me why these children were not raised by their (unknown) mother. Was she dead?

[See notes for Delilah Brewer Lindsey] According to Court Records and information from various sources, custody of both children was given to grandfather, Sackfield. Mary's aunt Delilah and her husband, James Lindsey later sued for custody of the children. Apparently the Lindseys got custody of the children, but it was later re-awarded to grandfather Sackfield, causing a rift between Sackfield and his daughter, Delilah. [LKH]
