| Overview | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Henry Ramey Corder was born in Wise County, Virginia, the third son of Jonathan O. Corder and Emily A. Ramey Corder. On 27 December, 1900, he married Manervia Margaret Holbrook, daughter of John Nelson and Nancy Davis Holbrook (they married on the same day and in the same place as his cousin A.L.P. "Sheriff" Corder married Nellie Cox). Ramey and Manervia Corder lived most of their married lives in a house just down the hill and around the bend from the home of the his parents, Jonathan and Emily Corder. The area of Wise County where Jonathan O. Corder's children and grandchildren lived is still called "Corder Town". The H. Ramey Corders had ten children. Henry Ramey was a farmer noted for his generosity, and is fondly remembered by all of his children. He was very soft hearted with his children, and they remember his good sense of humor (many of the children took after him in this respect, and fondly recall youthful pranks). | Son Plez K. Corder remembers...A Strict Disciplinarian "[Dad] never hit us. He didn't have to. We didn't want to disappoint him. I remember one time Dad called over the hill and told me and Henry to come on home for dinner because it was getting dark. Well, we messed around with Arnold [Corder] and pretty soon here came Dad and told us we'd 'done it now' and we'd 'better get out through yonder before he took a switch to us'. Then he told Arnold to get on home before he did the same to him. Then he came back up and just as soon as we were out of sight he cut a switch and started swarping his own pantleg with it and me and Henry yelled like he was killin' us. Arnold took off for home before Dad came after him too." Ross Corder remembers Henry Ramey Corder... "...a nice feller" | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
