| Misc. Notes |
"[Mable Stokely] Grigsby [of Asheville, NC] articles say that [a brother or a direct ancestor of Jehu's] Baron-Admiral Samuel Stokely was in the British Navy in 1588 during the fall of Spanish Armada and therefore Queen Elizabeth I let her first cousin marry Samuel in1588. Jehu himself claimed royal blood, probably from this story. He was shanghaied into the British Navy on the pretext that he'd injured some shrubbery on an estate.
After a 7 year Naval tour of duty, he emigrated--probably to the colony of South Carolina--and soon enlisted to fight the Navy that he resented for conscripting him in Britain. Soon he was captured by the British (or possibly was captured earlier during his British Naval career) anyway he was exchanged for other prisoners. He finished the Am. Revolution as a soldier in the Dept of Heavy Artillery."174 |
| Overview |
Came from Wales to the coast of the Carolinas in the early 1770s. Fought with America in the Revolutionary War. Said to have fought in the Battle of King's Mt. 173
"Jehu Stokely, the first Stokely that came to the United States was of Welsh blood and claimed to be of royal blood. This was a short time before the commencement of the Revolutionary War. He was born in the year 1747. He entered this country through the port of Charleston, South Carolina. He soon enlisted as a private soldier. After a time he re-enlisted with the Navy, and remained until he was terminated. He married a Miss Nancy Neil of Irish blood. They soon came to Tennessee, then North Carolina, about 1790." 176 |
