| Notes for Thomas STOKELY | ||||||||||||||||||||
| The [Thomas] Stokelys169 Grandfather Thomas W. Stokely came with his family from Tennessee in 1833, locating at Nacogdoches. The family consisted of his wife, five sons and four daughters, namely: Jehu, Isaac, James, John, Henry, and Nancy, Sarah, Susan, and Mary Ellen. The father enlisted in the war with Mexico about 1835 and was never heard of afterward. A few years later, about 1840, the family moved to Upshur County, locating near Gilmer, Texas. We have no trace whatever of the two first named sons, but I remember well the remainder of the family. Grandmother Stokely and her son James both died at the writer's home at Winnsboro in 1880. James Stokely had no family. John Stokely died in 1894 in Dublin, Erath County, Texas. I think he had one surviver only, a son named Frank. But Frank's whereabouts are unknown. Henry Stokely died at his home near Winnsboro about 1900. Surviving him are three sons and two daughters, namely: Thomas, Mack and Henry of Upshur County, Kinchie of Winnsboro, Mrs. Pynes of Picton, Texas and Mrs. Hay of Oklahoma. Miss Nancy Stokely was united in marriage to Mr. John Ables. Both passed away some time about 1865 or 1866. None survive them. Sarah and Susan Stokely were united in marriage to M.M. and Harvey Taylor as mentioned above. Mary Ellen was united in marriage to Sanders Husbands. Surviving that union are three daughters, namely: Mrs. Dora Kennedy and Miss Ellen Husbands of Greenville and Mrs. Lissie Tenley of Harlingen, Texas. The mother passed away in 1870 and the father in 1915. Both are at rest in the Greenville Cemetery. At this date, 1933, the undersigned is writing this history altogether from memory, and of course, it cannot be exactly correct in every detail. But in the main, I believe it is pretty nearly correct. (Signed) W.J. Taylor Born December 18, 1846 | ||||||||||||||||||||
