| Notes for Apolonia Marsella FRONCZEK |
-Never became American citizen. That was
a mix-up. She always wanted to be a citizen. My father took out citizenship
papers, but the people in the immigration office didn't have her name on
the papers. (Had sister Verna's name twice instead of Gladys.) She never
told me why she came to the United States.
-Went blind when she was about 89 or 90. She was with Gladys for a little
over three years.
-Apolonia's parents died when she was young. Father was a shoemaker, and
when she was about 13 or 14, she was sent to a rich person where she learned
how to cook. She probably was sent as a servant. Very seldom did she talk
about her parents.
-When we were brought up , we didn't sit and talk with our parents. I had
more communication with my mother when I was about 19 or 20. Before that
we worked and took care of the house, it wasn't like it is today. My mother
used to have two or three rooms to live in and we'd have a boarder to help
out. But I wouldn't give up my childhood for anything.
-Monica remembers that her grandmother told how the family swept their dirt
floor in Poland every day except Sunday. |
