The accounts which have come to us concerning John are meager and fragmentary. The traditions of his period cluster more thickly about the tall form of his more characterful wife (Mary Green). She has already been mentioned as a favorite with her father-in-law. The mother of Mary Green had an eventful and serious history. She was a native of Yorkshire, England, and had a sister evidently near her own age. Their father died, and their mother contracted a second marriage. These girls were in some way heir to a considerable estate. It was somehow to the interest of their stepfather, or his children, that the heirs should be out of the way. So it was contrived that they should be enticed on board of a ship which should set sail for America before they could realize their situation and make their escape. A party of girls were taken aboard the ship for the ostensible purpose of sight-seeing. When the sisters were induced to go to see the ship, it must have been represented as a pleasure excursion, and they were in holiday attire, for they seem to have brought to this country their fine clothes. The sisters were most likely brought to Philadelphia, as that was the great mart for the sale of kidnaped persons. Traditions retain assertions of their harships and suffering during their period of service; how their silks and fine clothing were taken from them; how they were compelled to work in the fields, and how unavailingly they showed to their mistress their tender hands blistered, and remonstrated that they had never been trained to such toil. The only answer was "Put blister upon blister; you have the work to do."
