"Eliza always wanted to
see the ocean. They packed her up and drove her to the coast in
a wagon. They lived in Chatham County, so that was a very long
trip by wagon. Eliza was so excited, and stood looking out at
the ocean so long that the waves washed the sand out from under
her feet and she fell and broke her hip. They put her in a chair
in that wagon with a broken hip and drove her all the way back
to [her son] Elwood's and carried her in on that chair."

This collection of
photos belonged to Eliza
Harriet Lindley Henderson (ca. 1830-1903). Eliza was the daughter
of Jonathan Lindley
(1796-1866) and Camilla
Meachem Lindley (1810-1861) of Chatham County, NC. In 1849
John and Camilla Lindley moved to Howard County, Indiana. Eliza
Lindley Henderson remained behind in Chatham County with husband
Isaac R. Henderson
(1827-1862). Her family photo albums were eventually passed to
grandson Artemas Hezekiah Henderson and granddaughter Manie Henderson
Capps, who passed them on in turn to Thelma Henderson Schoolfield
and Juanita McManus, respectively. Thelma and Juanita kindly
loaned the photos to Laura Henderson in 2006 so that they could
be posted and shared with our extended family. If you can identify
any of the unknown subjects in these photos, please
